When is BoroughCon?
Memorial Day weekend, May 26-29, 2017
Where will BoroughCon be held?
St. John’s University, on the southwest corner of Utopia Parkway and Union Turnpike in Jamaica, Queens.
How do we get to BoroughCon?
TRANSIT: The closest subway station is the F train’s 169th Street stop. You could also take the J, Z, E, AirTrain or Long Island Railroad to Sutphin & Archer/Jamaica Station. In either case, walk, bike, catch a ride or take the Q30 or Q31 north for just under a mile to Union Turnpike. Or you could take any of the Union Turnpike buses — Q46, QM1, QM5, QM6, QM7 or QM8 — to Utopia Parkway.
CAR: St. John’s is just north of Grand Central Parkway at Exit 17. The campus has ample, but not unlimited, parking.
What’s unique about BoroughCon?
It’s a celebration not just of nerd culture, but of the outer boroughs. It’s on a spacious, park-like campus, not the crowded confines of Midtown. And it’s over a holiday weekend that isn’t over-programmed (by New York standards).
Isn’t this a first-year convention? And don’t first-year cons usually stink?
Yes and yes. But our team ran Orlando’s KnightroKon for many years and has the experience and industry contacts to pull off a first-rate convention from the get-go. We expect to be here for a long time to come.
BoroughCon is a professionally planned and managed media event to be held in New York City’s Borough of Queens. Management expects to draw approximately 20,000 unique attendees, primarily from the more than 5 million residents of the outer boroughs. St. John’s University in Jamaica’s Hillcrest neighborhood will host BoroughCon over Memorial Day weekend 2017.
BoroughCon’s mission is to provide a celebration of “nerd culture” to the underserved markets in greater New York. It will be an extravaganza for fans of anime, comics, video games, and fantasy/science fiction films and television. Although midtown Manhattan’s New York Comic Con has become a destination event for four days every autumn, there is little else in the greater New York area or in its surrounding areas that presently serves the Four Boroughs’ genre fan community.
