WEEKEND ON SCREEN
The big news tonight is the premiere of Arrival, a tentpole sci-fi movie movie starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker. The PG-13 entry from director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, the upcoming Blade Runner sequel) has been getting rave reviews, but The Nerd Yorker is not sold on this yet. We’re fans of short story writer Ted Chiang, upon whose “The Story of Your Life” the film is based. It’s one of the top 10 SF shorts we’ve ever read, but how do you make a movie out of it? It’s a non-linear, stream-of-consciousness psychodrama about how the way we use language influences how we think and perceive. I don’t know what Renner is supposed to blow up or Whitaker is supposed to snarl menacingly at.
Thank goodness for Disney XD, which has no pretention to art. “Hey,” you could imagine one suit at the conference table saying, “you know what early teens want to see more of?” “A live-action series featuring better-looking early teens in tights fighting bad guys?” comes the reply over the Polycom. “Well, that too, but I was thinking more along the lines of giant robots.” Then someone presses a touchscreen and Mech-X4 pops out. This Power Rangers-meets-Voltron collision debuts Saturday at 8 p.m.
WEEKEND IN REAL LIFE
There are actually two different pop culture events in the Nerd York City gravity well. The first is LI Who, tonight through Sunday at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge. The Fifth, Sixth and Eighth Doctors will be on hand, which is quite a coup. They’ll be joined by a score of companions, allies, writers, artists and behind-the-scenes types representing all eras of the 53-year-old franchise.
If you’re looking for something in the Four Boroughs, though, Crown Heights’ Congregation Kol Israel will be hosting the inaugural Jewish Comic Con. It starts after Shobbos, and continues through Yom Rishon, B”H.
We’ll try to attend both. Let’s all sing together: “LI Who, ha-Navi …” (Never mind.)
REST OF WEEK
As if the Long Island convention wasn’t Whovian enough, there’s a Fathom Events screening of “Power of the Daleks” Monday night, starring Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor. It’s on a handful of screens at 7 p.m. For a listing, visit http://boroughcon.com/event/doctor-who-power-of-the-daleks/ . IF YOU WANT TO WIN TWO FREE TICKETS, be the first to leave a comment on that event page between now and noon Saturday, and reference The Nerd Yorker newsletter; Whitestone, Queens, showing only.
Wednesday night, we’re going back to the East Village for the Fantastic Fiction at KGB Bar reading. This is a special night for BoroughCon because our Web guru Matthew Kressel will be featured along with renowned horror writer John Langan. The salon starts at 7 p.m.
WHAT’S NEW AT BOROUGHCON
Got our swag in from FUNimation, lined up track directors for Cosplay and Anime (already got one for Gaming), and working on a bunch of stuff we’ll be announcing very, very soon.
